Sarah stood in front of the mirror caressing her face, neck and shoulders.
She stepped away from the mirror and looked at herself one more time as she was putting on her clothes.
Why did this have to happen to me, she thought.
She had suffered third-degree burns all over her body from a prank that some bullies had made at school. They convinced her to attend a bonfire during the summer. As she was dancing and having fun, one of the bullies threw gasoline on her and another pushed her into the pit.
As she screamed, they laughed and ran. When all of this was happening, an elderly couple witnessed the terrifying incident that had occurred and called the police.
The elderly couple were capable of putting down the fire and waited until the police and firefighters showed up. When she was hospitalized, the doctors were surprised that she had survived such a terrible incident.
To this day, the police are still trying to figure out who set Sarah on fire.
Sarah brushed her tears away as she thought about it. She grabbed a wig to hide the scars that the fire had created on her head, aside from losing all her hair.
Today was her first day of school and she was extremely nervous. Her parents had asked her if she was sure she wanted to return, but she knew she couldn’t let the bullies win.
Sarah couldn’t remember who had committed this hateful act, but she was determined to find out.
THE NEW STUDENT
As Sarah entered the classroom, she could hear people whispering around her. She felt nervous and started to regret not moving schools.
A curly-haired guy sat in the desk beside hers and introduced himself to her. His name was Kyle and Sarah noticed he had dimples when he smiled.
Instantly, she became nervous all over again and looked away.
As time went by, Sarah and Kyle became close and despite her scars, he looked past them and fell for who she truly was.
After a couple of months, she decided to open up to Kyle about the incident and how she hasn’t been the same ever since.
He comforted her and told her that he used to be bullied too, so he moved schools. He added that she was brave for staying at the same school.
THE NIGHTMARE ON HALLOWEEN
Sarah didn’t feel like going trick-or-treating so she stayed in and watched scary movies. Whenever the doorbell rang, she would run to the door eager to see what costumes she would see next.
After a couple of hours, she was ready to turn off the porch lights when there was a knock at the door. She opened it and looked down to see gasoline fluid trailing from her door towards the street.
She closed the door and ran to get her cellphone to call the police.
Suddenly, the lights of her house went out and the only source of light she had was her cellphone. Unfortunately, her battery was at 5%.
She decided to run to the corner of the living and stay hidden until the police came, but after a couple of hours, no one showed.
Her parents were out of town and Kyle told her he was babysitting his little brother. She called him, but no one would answer.
She didn’t know what to do and she didn’t want to step outside thinking that whoever is out there could kill her, so she remained in the corner.
Then, she drifted off into a deep sleep.
The next day, Sarah was woken up by her parents. They looked at her confused and she explained to them what happened. She felt as though someone was trying to prank her and she became angry because her parents didn’t believe her. She tried showing them the fluid that she saw the night before, but it wasn’t there.
She went upstairs to her bedroom and sat at her desk. Who could it have been, she thought.
All of a sudden, she heard the doorbell ringing one after the other. She ran downstairs and as soon as she was reaching the bottom of the stairs, her parents opened the door and they were covered with gasoline fluid and lit on fire.
Sarah began screaming and crying as she heard her parents screams. Panicking, she couldn’t find her cellphone. She looked over the fire and saw it on the floor where she had slept the night before. She decided to jump over the rail of the stairs and ran to get her cellphone.
The person who was at the door had ran off and she could not see who it was because they were wearing a Freddy Krueger mask. She could tell it was a man because of his body shape and as she was remembering all of this, she was repeating it to the dispatcher on the phone.
She ran to the front and grabbed the hose to help her parents, but it was too late. By the time she had put the fire down, their bodies were on the floor, unconscious.
A CALL FOR HELP
Sarah’s grandmother had stayed with her for a couple of months after her parents tragic death, but as soon as she turned 18, her grandmother left back home.
She didn’t mind because she didn’t want anyone around, other than Kyle. The day her grandmother left, later that evening Kyle showed up with suitcases.
They were planning on staying there until they could find another home. She couldn’t handle the fact that every time she opened the front door, she could hear her parents screams.
The next morning, Kyle had left for work and Sarah was finishing unpacking the last couple of boxes.
She looked inside one of the boxes and noticed a Freddy Krueger mask. She dropped it on the floor and felt an uneasy feeling in her stomach.
Shaking it off, she laughed because she knew there was no way he was the cause of the fire. Many people had purchased that mask and it was only a coincidence.
Later that day, Kyle picked Sarah up and they went out to dinner. As she was applying her lipstick, he suddenly slammed the breaks and her lipstick fell to the back seat. She looked in the back and noticed gasoline fluid and some matches on the floor.
She felt that uneasy feeling all over again.
At dinner, she tried her best to smile but all she could think about was what she had discovered. Kyle then grabbed some papers from his back pocket and showed her pictures of students from their high school.
He explained to her how this entire time he had tracked down the students that had caused the fire. He whispered to her that he killed them for her. As he was telling her how he killed them, she could see how his eyes would get excited whenever he mentioned the word ‘fire’.
Without hesitation, she took her phone out and dialed 911 without having Kyle notice. She stood up and began talking on the phone telling them what Kyle had told her, while backing away from him.
Kyle stood up and begged her to not do that because he loved her.
The police showed up and arrested him. As they were taking him away, he yelled to her that he had killed her parents because he loved her. He told her that they never cared about her and that he was the only one that did.
Years passed and it was a cold evening in October. Sarah was unloading the groceries and as she was reaching into the back seat, she turned around to see one of her kids wearing a Freddy Krueger mask.
